I just read in the NYCHS Central Headlight, 1991-3Q, page 5, that Mohawk #3001 was being restored to operation at the NYC Museum in Elkhart. Although the article focused on Ross Rowland's effort to develop and operate the 21st Century Limited, a museum train, on a 30,000+ mile trip around the Country, it noted that 3001 was being considered as one of two locomotives that would haul the train.

I am curious as to what happened to 3001 over the past 15 years? Also what happened to the 21st Century Limited concept? I don't remember hearing anything about either...sadly.

Hank, 1991 was the year that I became a "born again" steam fan. I was very naive about what was going on, and remember sending a letter to Railfan mag after reading about Ross's 21st Century Ltd. suggesting that he disguise the 614 as a Niagara. Like a teenager. I hadn't yet joined the NYCSHS so missed the Headlight which suggested that the 3001 be restored. I seem to recall that restoration was in the cards for 3001, but apparently that effort died out. Don't know the reason. The locomotive still resides at the museum in Elkhart, IN. A couple of years ago LEW sent me some pix of her, and I can't remember if either he or I put them on here. I will go search for them and try to post one. She is sitting outside and thus at the mercy of nature.

BOTH of the above photos were taken by, and are the property of Maurice Lewman.

Thanks for the info, Jim. Sad to see her just moldering away.

BTW, there's something wrong with the link to Lew's album. It gives a "can't be found" response.

Ooooh, Hank, I'm sorry, that's not a link to Maurice's album. It's a leftover from my corrections to get the photos to post. I have removed it, as it showed up and was an executable link. Both of those photos are in my RI album. Sorry.
