Possibly to keep rain water out of the pipe and prevent rust? Though that doesn't seem logical since the stoker was used all the time which would keep the exhaust pipe hot and evaporate any rain water. Maybe some firemen had a sense of humor and wanted to see if they could blow the can off the pipe when the stoker was working really hard...LOL
