Has anyone seen the movie The Station Agent? It stars Peter Dinklage. I'll try not to spoil too much, but I want to know if anyone else find themselves a little envious of his character during the movie? Yes, maybe a little lonely, but just being able to watch trains go by all day, every day. Great movie!
I've seen it and thought it was wonderfully done. My family would like it too and I plan to again rent it soon. Having once lived close by the NYS&W in northern NJ long ago, I'm well familiar with many of the filming locations.
Yeah, I have the DVD. I get a kick out of the scene where all the old foamers at a train club meeting are watching an 8mm black and white film with just steam locomotives going by. They all have a vacant stare. Are we all that bad?
Yeah, and the old man and Fin give each other a little nod and grin. I think we are like that...and I don't care. Woo!
Many decades ago a friend and I attended a two-day gathering of the Anthracite Roads Historical Society in Wilkes-Barre, PA. After the evening's scheduled events came to a close, most members retreated to their hotel rooms. However, a number of fans brought their slide projectors and hundreds of vintage slides, and opened their rooms up to whoever wanted to stop by. As my friend and I walked down the halls, all that could be heard from dimly lit rooms was "Ahhhhh!", "Oooooh" and "Mmmmm!" We half expected the vice squad to raid the hotel. It was hilarious. Yes, we really are all that bad.
What really bothered me about the movie as an Operation Life Saver presenter, was all the track walking, right down the middle of active tracks or balancing on top of the rail while walking. The rails all seemed to be very shiny bright on top. There were a few scenes where they were walking along side, just inches from a passing train. And then the drunk scene could have turned out much worse.
I enjoyed this movie, the end was a little lacking, but the rest of the movie (mostly the short line railfanning) was entertaining.
