Trainboard member daniel_leavitt2000 posted several pictures titled "Springfield Show". One of his pictures is what appears to be a preproduction model of an N Scale bay window caboose. Does anyone have any info on this upcoming model?

He posted a report on the Atlas forum. I didn't read all of it but the info you seek may be there.

Edit: I looked again and he does mention an SP style bay window from MT.

    Thanks for the info.

He also mentions an SP C-50 class caboose from Athearn. I believe the photo is the Athearn car because it looks like it has McHenry couplers.

Athearn and Micro-Trains are both doing the C-50-9's - MT announced by Eric Smith. MT's out in May 2009. Athearn's Dec 09/Jan 10.

    I hope they're reasonably priced.

At the level of detail parts on the Athearn, I expect them to be in the $30+ range. MT should probably be in that area also.

Cabooses will always be more expensive than the average freight car because most people don't buy them in bulk like freight cars.

Well, compared to the Overland cabooses. These will be a steal.

You'll be able to buy a fleet for the cost of one Overland(If you can find them).

    Have a good one,

And I was dreading converting a bunch of the old Walthers bay windows to looking more SP. Now I just have to wait! woohoo! :)

Only if they are the type of things you'd want to steal. I suspect that, for a lot of folks, they won't be.

    Why not?

I think that they'll be extremely successful...there's enough of us Espee fans craving a good quality bay window caboose and I'm very happy it will be a 'modern' one!

I saw these as well, and they do look impressive. Between these, and the Atlas Magor Caboose, I think N scale is heading in the right direction. I hope for a redo of an international bay window caboose one day.

You are all welcome! I have been working on converting seven old Atlas and ConCor bay windows in preparation for paint. I stripped them, filled some windows, removed the clunky roofwalks, end rails, and other details.

So of course Athearn and MTL have now joined TrainCat and added bay windows to their product lines. It does show that the manufacturers are listening though. For the last couple years bay windows have consistently been requested in numerous "Next Model?" threads.

I should be able to post a photo of the MTL Bay Window on Friday...or look for it on our web site. The first version is the C-50-9 without windows on the car sides. I'm pretty jazzed to add these to my SP fleet!

    Cheers

I am also looking forward to adding the Urban Gorilla to the fleet. It's a bit new to be opperating in my layouts time frame but hey, it's SP!

I may have to look at changing time frames on the layout from time to time. So I can run my newer diesels.

    That would be sweet Joe!

I'm pretty excited to see these released too. As someone who specifically requested the C-50-9 in your request thread 2 years, a big thank-you for taking the time to listen to our requests and then act on them! It'll be great to see these in action!

    Now..about those Golden Pig trailers....
(how about some without the Olympic logo?)

Runner Pack! Runner Pack! Runner Pack!

I'm looking forward to these. I think I'll take tomorrow off so I can sit at home and wait for the pictures. ;)

Photo and details are up on the MTL website now.

Joe, are the curved side grabs separate or molded on?

Also Joe, you'll have to change the designation on your website. It states that the caboose is a B50-9.

I hope your right because that's a lot of money to be throwing around if there isn't enough fans. With the companies offering non-prototypical schemes it should help but the cab is really a good bit too modern for its own good... even if they had just backdated the roof it could have gone a lot further.

Kitbashing is an option and there yet might be ways to improve on it that way. And if someone was to offer etched brass car sides that might help to spread the wealth around to those who are more into prototype modeling, but for some at least it likely won't be something they will welcome, since its just too prototype specific.

Don't get me wrong -- I appreciate the fact that us N scalers (SP in particular) are getting two bay window caboose models (finally!). But I have to wait until May for the MT and the end of the year for the Athearn??

I guess this is what usually happens when a new model is announced. Something to look forward to.
