Hopefully someone can help me track down some tricky details! Multiple locomotives in my build queue need these little rectangular air vents on the top or side of the cab:

The only matching detail parts I know about were Sunriseā€™s N-428; Sunrise is long gone, and so is my stockpile of their vents. Is there any current company who makes cab vents as cast or 3D printed parts? Or am I going to have to approximate them from scratch?

    Thanks in advance!

So many detail parts which were made by Sunrise, have never been done again. I wonder what ever happened to their molds and equipment?

Can you take a vent off a completed model and make a silicon mold from it then you can cast more out of resin?

Unfortunately it doesn't look like I have any of the original Sunrise parts; the very few I do have are already recasts of recasts, and a little rough around the edges. They might not be up to snuff for re-re-recasting, but I have started working on recreating them in Blender in the hope of 3D printing new ones:

They don't look that complicated to draw up. Looks like maybe they point in opposite directions one side vs. the other depending on the direction the loco is going? Is that right"

    Do you have any dimensions?

Based on pictures and the Sunrise copies I have, their footprint is about 6x12" plus a ~1-2" mounting flange all around. Those are the dimensions I'm using for my CAD version, and it looks about right. It's harder to say how they open, but it doesn't look like it'd be too hard to make both opened and closed versions

Did you have any success with the cab vents? I tried back when you posted but forgot to report the results. The results for me weren't good if I tried to stay to what I though were the true size of the vents.

I tried using the smallest dimension that would still print.

The rivets appear large but on past prints I've needed to do that to just get them barely visible if you are looking at the item from a few inches.

    The results??

Not good. They are so small you really can't see the detail at all. Maybe enlarging everything 20-30% might help and also getting rid of the rounded edges.

So did you have any luck?

Those are tiny, but as far as I can see they look good! I haven't even attempted to print my design yet. I was able to find a set of the Sunrise vents thanks to an awesome member here, and I think I'll try making recasts of them in the near future.
