Thought I had posted this one. Looking back it wasn't there so..... Less of a kitbash, more of a superdetail with tender swap. The Bachmann 0-6-0 boiler is actually spot on for a B&O D-30 USRA 0-6-0 switcher, just the tenders are all wrong.
Okay, here's my ATSF 4197 (Ex B&M) conversion from 30-some years ago... shortened and modified MRC berk shell over a modified Atlas mikado mechanism. That' all we had to work with in those days... Regards, Otto
I think I saw this in the N scale steam book! Nice work. I think you can maybe make that engine from a life-like berkshire now. I've seen it kitbashed as the original B&M engine.
Thanx Tom, you inspired me to do my MDC/Athearn 2-8-0 bash. I moved the sand dome and bell. put a different smokestack and added a pump thingy on the side w/ step over it.
Also another boiler I'm doing for a SD&AE 2-8-0. Instad of using styrene to plug the holes like the headlight (white area ) I used lead, super glued in place and filed to shape.
Cool! I am proud to say that I had at least one person convert to SD&AE steam! I would use a model power 4-4-0/2-6-0 cab for a replacement. Also you can go to sdrm.org for more prototype photos of SD&AE #50. Look under the SD&A roster in their history section. I actually am thinking of getting another MDC 2-8-0 for a TTn3 Pacific Coast Railway engine. (that is, if I decide to go through with TTn3. I may just model the pacific coast railway as rebuilt with standard gauge, allowing me to use my ex-SD&AE steamers.)
I'm making SD&AE 2-8-0 #50 as well. Here's a link to its construction page. I also have a list of parts I used as well to help you with your kitbash. http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?t=128879
Looks great! I like how it sits so low: a nice contrast to the "big" 2-8-0s. What was the original mechanism and body?
Thanks! The original engine was an Athearn 2-8-0. I have a construction thread if you want the details. Here's s'more pix:
Excellent photography Tom!! I love the perspective distortion you were able to achieve here!:thumbs_up:
Thanks, Mark. I don't think I did that on purpose...that's just what happens with my camera if I get too close to something!
One of my earlier attempts at going all out on a GN O7 Mike. Been so long I forgot which 2-8-2 mechanism is under this. Entire body is scratched out of styrene with detail Associates parts and what ever else was in the parts bin that would do. Vandy tender is also entirely scratched out of styrene except for the railings and tender hatches. Photo was with a POC early digital camera long since replaced. GNs O7 and 08 Mikes were big homebuilt engines and I posed the Mike alongside a Kato USRA for a size comparision. The scratched vandy has long since been replaced by a ready built Vandy.
Nice! Is the 4-6-2 from a model power engine? If so, how does it run? New tender pickup? I know this thread has been inactive for months, but are there any new (or new pictures of old) steam kitbashes?
