Hello Jurg - Bring money. Entry is free, you'll spend it all in the Museum shop, loads of historic posters, etc. Food, drinks and snacks are very expensive in England, so if you happen to have a shoulder bag, stock it before setting out. Also, make sure you have extra camera batteries, and storage media, there are lots of photographs needing to be taken. You might consider writing to the manager in advance, to introduce yourself - the last time I went, it was some years ago, bringing a group of university design students (an experience in itself), but given your background, I suspect that they would be pleased to help ensure that you were given access to some materials of particular interest. If you have enough time in England, the North York Moors historic railway is not far away in Pickering, which has steaming in the summer months. Dave
forgot to mention, if modern stuff is more your scene, the Northern Belle Orient express train hauled by a couple of DBS class 67s is passing through York on Monday on a Helensburgh to London working. Where else are you going in England ? in this country you are never far away from a heritage railway site! cheers KEV
Jurg, If you are lucky you might see Tornado 60163! Ensure that you have enough time to spent in York at the National Railway Musueum. Ribblehead viaduct.... West Sommerset Railway.... If you make it to Scotland check out the West Highland line from Fort William to Mallaig and visit the Glenfinnan viaduct ect, etc...... Your stay in the UK will be too short... Regards, Frank
Hello Friends Thanks for the big help! Much appreciated! At the moment I don't know the exact programm but I think we go for Stonehenge, Bath, Windsor and a trip on the Themse. York maybe on Thursday.
Hi Jürg, they requested I move this topic where it would get more exposure, so I put it in the railfaning forum, leaving a re-direct so people here can find it too.
It might be too late for this, but contact British embassy or consulate in your city for this. There is a guide to inexpensive dining in the UK. It is "Dining in Cathedrals & Churches" or some such title. What is it? Many historic cathedrals and churches have preservation societies to raise funds to restore and preserve the historic places of worship in Great Britain. The societies maintain restaurants within the confines or connected with the church buildings. It is all volunteer work, the food is prepared on site in commercial kitchens. The food is quite tasty, and much less expensive than dining in a restaurant. There is(or at least was) a kitchen at the Yorkminster which is a magnificent Norman Cathedral. It is still a house of worship. You are not required to attend any service nor is there any proselytizing. You go to the church to see it as an historic shrine(which the Yorkminster is)and you and your family can have a quite satisfying lunch there, before or after you tour the FABULOUS railroad museum. As the other posters have stated, the museum is just steps from the railway depot. BTW the Yorkminster has a ChristmasEve carole service prior to the midnight mass(Anglican). It is standing room only and is a first rate production! You WILL spend money at the museum store! You are bound to find something there which you must possess in order to live a complete life! LOL While you didn't mention it, you ARE going to take the train while in the UK! When we were last there, I had rented a car, a Sterling, but we took the train from Swindon to London to York and return. You wont want the ride to end! Charlie
Hi Charlie, yes we ride with the Train and the Subway. Thanks for all the info's! As soon as I'm back I'll updated my website with the Museum pictures.
That is great! I know you & family will have a great time. Bon Voyage! and I will eagerly await seeing your photographs! Charlie
