I recently came across this vintage Lionel train set at a thrift shop in Cincinnati. If anyone can give me more information on it, it would be much appreciated. The markings are alll Chesapeake and Ohio. The Engine and coal car seem to be in pretty good condition. There are five rolling stock cars including: a motorcraft ford / autolite spark plugs box car, a T.A.&G. RY. CO. hopper, an A.T.S.F. flatbed, a Burlington Northern hopper, and a Chesapeake and Ohio caboose. Tons of track. An original type 4150 50watt transformer. A lit crossing sign. And two old track switchers. If anyone knows model numbers, or approximate value, that would be awesome. I'll try to upload some pictures. -Lou
That looks like someone combined the body and lead/trailing trucks from the NYC Hudson or Berkshire locomotive with the drivetrain of a Scout 0-4-0. But, I don't know that much about Lionel. You will need to find a book on the various models, or find a site that has this info. Lionel engines are much like Rolexes or other collectables-many a scam, at too much money. That it has a metal body suggests it is 70's vinatge or earlier.
Lou- Welcome to TrainBoard! I agree. It looks like a mixture of pieces. If there is no number on the engine cab sides, try looking at the underside of the motored portion. Also, the same for that tender, look on it's bottom. Can you post photos of the other cars? Boxcab E50
Thanks guys. I picked it up pretty cheap for old lionel stuff. I am usually more into ho scale trains, but couldnt pass this up. The engine has the number 8204 on the side. It's a metal body for sure. It weighs a ton. I figured I'd put it up on craigslist in the area to see if anyone was interested in it. There are pictures of the other cars on the post. http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/atq/1739345420.html Thanks again guys.
8204 was a 4-4-2 C&O steam engine made in 1972. What is the caboose number? Is it 9064? If so, made 1971. Looks like a BN 9140 gondola, which has been issued at least a couple of times- Early 1970s, early 1980s. Possiblt a 9012 TA&G hopper, which has also been issued a couple of times at least. 1970s and? If the cars are all clean and complete, you may be able to get a few dollars. But by no means are any of these rarities which might bring in larger dollars. Boxcab E50
Well thanks for the info. It's all pretty clean. Especially the cars. My dad also has some older O scale trains. I may just combine the sets and put together another display. The caboose is a 9064. Thanks again. I'll have to stick around the boards. Lots of great info for sure.
