Does anyone out there have a good history book covering the Monon? Prior to the RR carrying the name Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville, it should have been something else. I had notes on that, and the date for when it became the CI&L. But cannot find them. Anyone? Boxcab E50
Boxcab, I'm not of much help.. Someone else may be of some help tho, as I'm not to familar with the Monon. Might get us some trafic in here tho! Which is needed....
According to the Monon Historical & Technical Society web page, it looks like the name was Chicago, New Albany & Louisville before it was CI&L.
Nathan- Thanks! This sounds like the name I'm seeking. Can you tell me where on the Monon H&TS site I can find this info. At a quick glance, I'm not certain which link will lead me there. Boxcab e50
Here's a backwards look at the time line of the Monon RR and it's predecessors: CHESSIE SYSTEM - CSX SEABOARD SYSTEM: '83-????? (UNSURE WHEN MERGED INTO CHESSIE SYSTEM) LOUISVILLE AND NASHVILLE: 1854-1983 MONON:1856-1971 (INTO L&N) CHICAGO, INDIANAPOLIS & LOUISVILLE : 1856-1898 (UNDER L&N 1911-1921) LOUISVILLE, NEW ALBANY & CHICAGO: 1859-1898 NEW ALBANY AND SALEM: 1850-1898 (RECLASSIFIED AS STEAM FROM AN ELECTRIC RAILROAD - NO HISTORY ON THAT - must have been a real fantasy back in 1850!!!!!!) Boxcab e50</font>[/QUOTE]Heh, guess I shoulda been more specific... Look under the "Stories, poems, etc. about the Monon" link, the first link is to an excerpt titled "Hoosiers Start A Railroad". It mentions more of the early history of the railroad. Also, looks like Johnny Trains has a more complete timeline than this article.
I can trace railroad names rather easily for anyone that would need that kind of info. Well, at least until 1983. Trust me when I say there are some EXTREMELY obscure names out there!
I've collected RR paperwork for decades. And in so doing, have stumbled upon names that I had to dig deeply to learn where they ever existed. Some sounded very grand. But were only a few miles long. If they ever even got off the planning boards! Boxcab E50
