I have 3 track o scale track - my train "runs out of steam" on the other side of the track. What gauge of wire would one use to run to a power clip away from the original? Do you hook it up to the transformer or to the first power clip??

18 for the main carrier wire, and 12-14 for the wires you connect to the track itself

Err... AWG get smaller as the number go up, right?
So wouldn't that be 12-14 (more copper) for the main "bus" wires, and 18 (less copper) up to the tracks?
If you're only running one engine at a time, you can use thinner wires, if that saves you money.

Suggested wiring would be: (ooh! ascii art!)

Controller ----+-----+

where ---- is 12-14 gauge and + is a join to the 18 gauge which leads to the track itself.
Of course, there's two wires, so it looks more like ====.

Does that help?
