...seeing BN green. Last week, a friend asked me a bunch of questions. So I started digging through a few of my slides. Found some favorite memories from my few excusions to chase the Green Machine. Unfortunately, my slide scanner simply does not produce crisp results. They often seem to blur or pixelate. The transparancies themselves are good, clear. Am still trying to figure a work-around to obtain better results. Oh well. If anyone is interested: http://www.train-orders.com/RFAN/BNRR/BNRR.html
Inasmuch as I hate to admit it, I've also shot BN power, both print & slide. I tried to pay attention to the older units and some of the oddballs, such as the first-generation motive power, the cabless B30-7As, the cabless ex-Frisco unit (now in BNSF paint & working in Tulsa), and the single-engine Expediter TOFC freights.
I too miss the old BN green units. I just wish I would have taken more pictures when I was younger of the units running on the CSP. Who would have known that 20yrs later there would not only be no more BN green, but no more trains running on the CSP
I live in IL with IRM in my backyard. While I miss those days, BN-1, BN-2, BN-3, the BN E9 Commuter Unit and the U30C live on alive and kicking. While it's not the same, at least I can finally walk up to those girls and touch them. I thought I'd resurect this from my old thread: http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/attachment.php?attachmentid=17193&d=1273507042
It's not easy now, but when I was living in Beaverton or, I could just get my fix by heading to one of the BNSF yards and watching for the green and black gp38s and gp39M/V/Es. Or, before they were scrapped' the POTB SD9 chop noses.
There is one photo on your site showing NW5 987. Is that the same locomotive as #187 that is now at Oregon Pacific RR in Portland?
Add me to the list of those who miss the BN forest green and coal black locos! They seemed to weather much better than the orange/yellow/red colors of BNSF.
I still see a few locomotives in green BN paint around here but they are becoming more rare. This was from June 2011 in Rosenberg.
As far as I can recall, yes. I believe the GN to BN numberings for these were straight across. One became nine. But it has been over forty years now....
I too miss the Cascade Green. My last trip to Galesburg proved that one had to really look to find anything green. Here is a shot of Galesburg Yard in 1998: Compare with 2011: Glad I shot all that Kodachrome in 1996 - 2000. I have many pictures of CNW, SP, SF and BN during the transition. Like Ken I need to scan them but do not have a scanner.
