Hi All, Just joined and have spent quite a while looking to see if there was a forum for "newbies". Couldn't find one so as I am starting an On30 layout I thought I would so hello to like minded modelers.Would say Hi to all members but not sure how. Hopefully a moderator will re-route this if it's in the wrong place, and I apologise in advance if it is. Have recently returned from a tour of the western states (WA - CA) which reinforced my interest in narrow gauge lines. I look forward to visiting the forum often and when I start I will no doubt be asking for advice. Thanks for having me.
Hi there, welcome, I also into ON30, hope you post pictures as your new project start to progress. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsjlaceT4xo regards Ray
Many thanks for the welcome. I will keep you posted, however I am waiting for some decent weather so I can clear the garage, (the intended site).
Welcome at TrainBoard, and welcome to narrow gauge. Since last summer I'm into H0n3. I build modules. Wolfgang
Welcome to Trainboard! I model HO but have been very interested in On30, please keep us "posted' :tb-biggrin:
Welcome! I've been to the West Country before...quite gorgeous! We took the A30 north of the moor on a trip to Penzance, New Quay, and Lands End...gorgeous country you live in! Glad your trip to the American west firmed up your interest in NG. The two major flavors are industrial (specifically, logging) and mainlines (usually in Colorado). There were quite a few cool NG operations out in the California-Oregon area. Most were off the beaten path, but perhaps you had a chance to see some of the fun! Here are a few clips of some of the best known NG operations still in existence out there: SV http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pq1YcMxEA2U&feature=related Roaring Camp with West Side Lumber #2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naKweVeBeJE&feature=related Knott's Berry Farm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muLWQOlUUTU&NR=1 Michael
Hi, Michael, Glad that you enjoyed your trip to my part of the UK, I certainly enjoy living here having come from London. It is an attractive area but not spectacular as parts of the States. Thanks for the links by the way, enjoyed them. Best wishes, John
I suppose I shall post this here since I am still relatively new to trainboard, and I just have an obscure question regarding narrow-gauge modelling. The local hobby store just got in a huge consignment lot, including quite a few of the old MDC 3-in-1 kits. One of the kits has a plan to build a small narrow gauge mallet. The original model was static and would have been non-powered, but somebody published an article in RMC (like twenty years ago) that detailed how to rework the loco and make it a running model. The only thing is, I'm pretty shakey on some aspects of this... I'm just curious if it's even still possible to get things like the Model Die Casting HOn3 driving wheel sets that would be required for such a conversion. I just want to make sure that there is actually even any water to land in in this particular pool, before I go trying to leap into it.
I'll try to answer, although other people are better qualified on this. MDC/Roundhouse's former HOn3 products were discontinued by Horizon/Athearn. To get some of their drivers, you'd probably have to get them out of one of the 2-8-0 kits that pop up at shows or on ebay. An alternative might be to see if Blackstone would sell some of theirs, but I doubt it as they are imports. Michael
