Afternoon everyone, Probably no one believes it but I do keep coming here to try and keep current. Since I don’t have a lot to say I don’t say much. Instead I’ve been getting the backyard layout operational. Looking on FB for sale I found this nice Aristocraft 0-4-0 available at a good price. Since it’s mid July of course I was wondering what to do about this year’s Christmas train and thought this would be a good locomotive for it. My red switcher took some damage a few years ago and I’m worried the Egg Liners may not last forever. One of them has nearly 1,000 actual miles on it if you can believe it. So far the only problem is that the 0-4-0 is silver and black with Santa Fe markings. What’s the best way to paint it red and make it a bright red? I’m guessing white primer but I’m open to ideas. I’ve found in the past that reds, yellows, oranges and so on don’t look as bright when painted over a dark base so white or light grey primer is what I’m thinking. Paint is not what I do best though so I’m open to ideas. Now I need a Santa Claus engineer in the right scale… Thanks! Rick H
It is true that primer color can change the topcoat. I would agree with your idea for a light color primer. You might ask an autobody shop or auto parts store which sells paints for their thoughts.
I paint a lot of product models at work, and typically if it's a color I use white primer. If the project is small, say one appliance, or a small machine, I'll use Rustoleum automotive spray paint primer in white. Most paints I use go over it with no problems. I also follow the instructions to a T. Nice little (big) loco BTW. Scott
