From the Trains.com newswire: Norfolk Southern is slated to receive 50 new SD70Ms from EMD next year. The new power will have flared radiators (much like the latest UP SD70Ms), North American-style cab (with, allegedly, a sharper drop in the nose for better visibility) and standard control stands. Also, NS plans to put a new-style speed-lettering logo on the new diesels (see Norfolk Southern website for a peek at the alleged new logo- it's on the top of the page) [ 26. I saw the post on the Trains news wire, but there is nothing on the NS site itself!? I don't think there is that much of a difference (or improvement) to make a big deal about either way. Maybe if they switched and painted the locos white with black lettering,,,,, Harold
Spent the day at a switching yard today and brought up the new logo with a crew. None of them had even seen it yet. They thought it would be a good idea to get rid of the old logo that alwys seems to get an anotomically correct touchup by some tagger. One crew said they used to carry a can of paint thinner just in case. Embarrassing to go out on the road with an excited stallion!
Hi nscalenewbie, Welcome aboard! I bet you see a lot more NS traffic in Atlanta than I do! I still haven't seen anything on the NS site regarding the "new logo". Maybe they should do something more adventurous like reversing the black and white colors on their locos! Harold
I was told several weeks ago by an NS source that the change will only be with the ===NS logo applied to the long hood of the locomotives. The new style logo will be used on all locomotive repaints, as well as the 50 SD70M and 100 Dash 9-40CW units that are on order for 2003 delivery. Repaints with the new logo were to start as soon as proper stencils were received in Altoona. Chris Toth
I went to the NS web site today and at the top of the page was a new ===NS logo with a horse outline between the === and the NS. Is this the new "speed-lettering" logo? If so, I think it looks great!!
That new logo is starting to show on some NS letterheads and other official stuff so maybe the locomotives are next, even though I havnt heard nothing yet.
