There were 1502 S-2s and 797 S-4s, almost identical externally except for trucks. A manufacturer could do both pretty well with one shell and two sets of sideframes. And the only S-series in N is the old Arnold/Rivarossi.
Some of the prototype SW1500s have Blomberg trucks as well. This type of switcher should be my choice, but I'm not in a hurry. Dom
I didn't think they could fit Blombergs on the SW1500 frame. They put them only on the Mexican SW1504s, which I presume had a different frame.
After you figure out how to do the low S1-S4 carbody, stretch the frame to do an RS 1-3. Once again the model follows the prototype as the body was stretched to fit a longer frame & road trucks. Another step may be to copy the Minitrix high-hood FM switcher on a Zscale frame. It may still be one of the better DC switcher designs. Dare we ask for EJ&E Big Orange center-cab Baldwins?
I'm not much of a US rail fan any more . . . but are you sure of that? Sounds more like an MP15, either AC or DC, to me. Or an SW1504, which as stated, was basically a Mexican variation of an SW1500 with a longer chassis to accommodate the larger trucks. Most SW1500s had Flexicoil 8' trucks, not Blombergs which are 9' wheelbase. The rest just had 8' AAR drop equalised trucks. The Flexicoils achieved much the same thing as having Blombergs on the later units - allowing higher speeds so the locos could be used as small road switchers. Ben
According to Railpictures.net, this loco is a SW1500 and the trucks it rides on look like Blomberg type. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=276309 But maybe it's a rebuilt... Dom
Don't trust any locomotive model given by RP - it's entered by the photographer. In this case, that appears to be an MP15DC. The similar-looking SW1500 rebuilds you're thinking of are CN ex-WC, and they still have Flexicoils.
I would say an: Alco S2 or an EMD NW2 based on the scheme at the bottom http://yardlimit.railfan.net/guide/product.html Carsten
Welcome to Trainboard Carsten, and we love to see some of your work. Trainboard is a great forum for show and tell.
