My son and I got bite by the narrow gauge bug at a train show, when we saw a hon30 layout. We are n scalers but now are building a 3x6 HOn30 layout. I have build three kitbashed engines, 6 wheel diesel(n scale Bachmann phymouth) 0-8-0 (N scale Atlas 0-8-0 boiler and mech) 2-8-0 (Atlas boiler and Bachmann Mech)and some cars (Hornby HO 4 wheel cars narrowed with a chop saw the glued back togather)and some using Bachmann n scale old time cars, it is fun kitbashing these, I do not need to follow any prototype, however the steam engines are loosely based on the 0-8-0s 2 foot engines in china. We are only using Kato unitrack on the layout not realistic but easy and reliable. Is the any other interesting kitbashed HOn30 engines or cars out there?
It would be fun to see pictures of your motive power. I have done some HOn30 in my past, and am thinking of re-entering on a very limited basis. I have some left over oNeTrak module bases just begging for a project.
Here are HOn30 0-8-0 and 2-8-0 both N scale Atlas 0-8-0 boilers Poche/Riv HO 2-4-0 standed down cabs and tender shells,0-8-0 is stock Atlas mech with spectrum tender and 2-8-0 bachmann mech and tender. The photos realy show flaws inthe kit bash don't they.
Photos are a good teaching tool. The "next time" factor... Keep at it! What might be your next project?
I have made a number of cars so far, some using HO hornby and other cars cut in the middle and spliced back togather. The good thing about narrow gauge is alot of the real engines and cars where kitbashed over the years anf looked a little rough.
Most HO cars are too wide so I have cut them lengthwise using a chopsaw(watch your fingers)and the glue them back together.I like old time cars in HO and the Bachmann oldtime N scale cars,I just glue a new wooden deck on them.
N scale Bachmann arch bar and Bachmann short heavy weight passenger trucks and Round house old Express reefer trucks. They work and are cheaper thank purpose build HOn30 trucks and I already have many of them.
Hey, Neat!. Im working on a HOn30 micro, and the Motive Power is Shapeways Climax on a life-like GP chassis and a couple of HOn3 models riding on narrowed HOn3 wheelsets. Any progress on your project? Buck
Got some power under construction... Riding on MP-15 chassis, they will be end cab units. Also hit up the local train show this last weekend. Man, they had Blackstone and it was almost too damn close.
