I've been in N scale for about 25 years, (and 20 in HO before that) but have been curious about this scale, and recently picked up some Z scale (quite by accident) when I thought I was buying some (more) N. Happy accident! In doing online research about Z, this Forum gets mentioned a lot, so I signed on and here I am. It appears that this is the most active of any Z scale forums I've found, so I am happy to be here. I recognize a lot of names here from other sites, and some of you will "know" me as well. Any how, I now have purchased a bit of MTL track ( I opted for this brand, as to my eyes it looks more "North American" than the Rokuhan line), a Rokuhan controller, and have 2 MT F7s and a small group of rolling stock. Some observations, if I may: The track if fine: it reminds me of my Kato N scale Unitrack. I hope they will expand the line somewhat, though it'll be hard to "catch up" with what Rokuhan has done already. Rokuhan controller works really well; I like the "constant light" feature. I must admit I was a little skeptical at first: transformers are supposed to be big, heavy and have metal cases, right? This is small, light weight, plastic and is the first power pack I've ever had that uses a "wall wart" for power. I think it's great! The MTL cars are what I would expect from that firm. Most of my N scale rolling stock is MT, so no surprises here, except they've managed to maintain the same high level of detail on items so much smaller. Impressive. The first F7 I received was "DOA"; I did a complete tear-down and cleaning, and with a new set of brushes, it runs as expected. Good over-all speed control, a bit noisy, but no louder than a first-release Kato F3 I have. The second one is a newer model, and the shell is much improved as far as detail and finish. I would consider these units to be the Athearn "Blue Box" diesels of Z scale: simple, rugged, dependable and a good "entry level" loco for newcomers to the scale...like me. Mark in Oregon
Hi Mark, Welcome to Z scale! I think you will discover us sooner or later, so why not make it sooner? www.americanzline.com Best, -Rob(A) AZL
Thank you, Rob. Believe me, I know about your line; am an AZL Forum "member", and am sure my next loco will no doubt be AZL, be it a Mike or perhaps the new F3... Mark in Oregon
