Hi guys. I received my latest New York Central "Headlight" last week and there is an article in it entitled "40 Years of Motive Power Progress on the New York Central." No date is given for the article, but I think from some of the comments made that it was published in late 1945 or early 1946, as the Niagara was just coming on line. The article contains many charts of drawbar pull and drawbar horsepower for the different locomotive types, comparisons of all manner of details of the types. It also contains some eye-opening statistics such as: "In 1929 the J-1's were performing in the 18,000 mile (per month) range and in 1938, the J-3's began making mileage close to 20,000."
"Mileage between classified repairs was 194,217 in 1941 for the J-1's and 232,768 in 1942 for the J-3's." "Maximum mileage made in any one month was 20,200 by a J-1 and 20,905 by a J-3." "The 50 L-4's made 4,874,678 miles in passenger service and 1,099,315 miles in freight service in 1944; the 65 L-3's made 882,173 miles in passenger service and 3,288,241 miles in freight service." !!!!!!!! By the time the J-3 was under construction, J-1's had been operated 200,000,000 miles! Holy smokes (pun intended.) That's some serious running! This was a very interesting article. It's much too long to try to reproduce for publishing here, plus it's copyrighted. The bottom line is the New York Central ran the wheels off their engines.

Just shows what you can do if you change the oil and filter every 3000 miles! :)
