Just curious- Can anyone tell me how the NYS&W is doing these days? I heard that after the Conrail breakup to CSX and NS, the NYS&W lost a bunch of traffic.

As a fan of dormant tracks being placed back in servce, I always thought it was great that the NYS&W was able to put the west end of their lines back into regular use. I'd hate to hear that rails are once again rusting away.

CSX is dying to take over the Susie Q.

I think there is like one or two through trains from Utica to Little Ferry per day..........
    Whatever, the numbers are bad.

TrainBoard members, Russ, Long Island Louie and myself like to railfan Little Ferry and if you get lucky, the NYS&W will be doing switching work in and out of the North Bergen Yard.

But, they hang on, just like the NY Cross Harbor in Brooklyn.

    Thanks Barb!

They have a nice web presence. Some that I have seen are nowhere close to being as user friendly.

Somehow, I had a feeling that this would be the answer. I hope the day of the mega-mergers is fast closing. Every single one has been detrimental.

What would CSX do with the NYS&W? And what rails that they currently use, would swiftly be ripped out?

    :(

I did some research and it seems that CSX died a long time ago and actually is the reason that Susy-Q is still alive. It seems that NS and CSX both own 45% of Susy while the Otsego Group (Susy) owns 10%

Here is an article from 1997:

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) -- A $55 million offer by CSX Corp. and Norfolk Southern Corp.'s to buy the Delaware Otsego Corp. and its New York Susquehanna and Western Railway was accepted, officials said Monday.

CSX and Norfolk are forming a new company for the acquisition with Delaware Otsego's president and chief executive officer, Walter G. Rich, who will retain his position after the deal closes in September. The firm will remain headquartered in Cooperstown.

Delaware Otsego operates a 500-mile rail line that provides freight service through New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The original offer was for $19 for each outstanding share, but the sale price offer increased to $22 a share and was approved by the Delaware Otsego's board of directors, the company said.

The good news is that Susy just got a new customer which may turn into a daily run for them and they are also doing well upstate.

Hey, Russ that was a good article.
I had no idea that CSX/NS had bought almost all of the railroad's shares.
But.....it was 6 years ago too.
I've talked to many railfans in Little Ferry, and of course they all want 100 NYS&W trains a day going through there, but I just don't think the NYS&W is doing all that well........

Can anyone come up with some more recent info?

I would hate to see that name die. It's one of the last surviving old names in railroading.........

    That website is cool.

I think that the one thing that would bring the Susy-Q back is if N.J. ever let's them do the proposed Hawthorne to Sussex county passenger line that they want to do. The passenger demand is there and it would sure be great to see some Susy-Q passenger trains!!

    Nice photos Barb.

I love the RDC! (first link)

Gotta send that to our friend Tyler!

Hey Russ, I wonder if the Susie Q has ever used CSX or NS power on it's home rails?

That commuter link would free up many roadways along there. I read the stats a long time ago which goes to show how long the wheels of progress (politics) take to start moving........affecting quite a significant number of perspective commuters as the time drags on.

Barb, Boxcab, Johnny and Russ, part of the Suzie Q's problems have to do with the modernization of their motive power. I shot this one of one of their mainline freight engines getting ready to pick up it's train. Other modern motive power appears in the background. :D [IMG]

We'll have to ask Barb for some help on this one. She sent me the link to a local paper up there. It's yesterday's news, and I can't open it either.

Barb, can you find that again for us?

    Derailed by human error?
Train may have backed into some parked rail cars
    BY GREG ERBSTOESSER
    Press & Sun-Bulletin

Reconstruction began Wednesday at the railroad bridge over Front Street near Clinton Street in Binghamton, where a derailment occurred Tuesday. The derailed cars were removed overnight.

    DIOGENES AGCAOILI JR. / Correspondent

BINGHAMTON -- Human error may have caused the potentially dangerous freight train derailment Tuesday that shut down Front Street traffic for some 20 hours, railroad and city officials said.

One rail car fell down the Front Street underpass embankment around 4 p.m., landing on the sidewalk and just missing vehicles and pedestrians on Front Street.

The cause of the incident, which threw eight rail cars off their tracks, remains under investigation.

Nathan Fenno, vice president of the Cooperstown-based New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway, which owned the train, said the train may have backed into several parked rail cars.

Mayor Richard A. Bucci said he was told a track switch may not have been fully activated.

While nothing has been ruled out, Fenno said, "Human error is a possibility."

Like equipment aboard airplanes, trains have a record that tracks time, speed, braking and other information about the locomotive's operation.

"We're going to pull the tape from the locomotive," Fenno said.

The 78-car freight train, originally believed to consist of 80 cars, began in New Jersey with Binghamton its final destination. It was operated by a two-man crew.

One engineer operated the locomotive while the other crew member, positioned at the rear of the train and in radio communication with the engineer, guided the train into the yard.

The train was backing at 5 mph or less, Fenno said. The first derailment occurred near the Chenango Street overpass.

The crew, unaware of the first accident, continued to back up, causing the second and more severe accident at the Front Street overpass.

Rail crews worked through the night to clear the wreckage and return the freight cars to their tracks.

By 9 a.m. Wednesday, police said, Front Street was open.

Overhead, one track was back in service by 4 p.m. Wednesday, and a second line was expected to be restored Wednesday night, Norfolk Southern Railway spokesman Rudy Husband said. Norfolk Southern owns the tracks.

Husband said an inspection of the underpass' iron superstructure showed several rivets were lost. They were replaced and some bracing was repaired. Rail traffic was diverted around the accident site.

The Federal Railway Administration will receive a formal report of the incident.
