My Nikon 70 did die and is now on life support with DR Nikon. Brought the camera in to day to discover Nikon have issued a product advisory for the following cameras

Nikon D2H, Nikon D70, Nikon F55, Nikon Coolpix 3100, Nikon Coolpix 5700 and Nikon Coolpix SQ

The service advisory for the D70 is as follows

    Nikon D70 Service Advisory

It has come to our attention that select electrical components in a limited number of D70 cameras may, in some instances, fail affecting camera performance and/or operability.

While only a limited number of D70 cameras are affected by this advisory, if (1) when a memory card is inserted, your D70's memory card access lamp blinks, locking camera operations and preventing operation, or (2) with no memory card inserted, the camera will not turn on despite the battery indicator showing a fully charged battery, Nikon Canada Inc. will service it free of charge.

Just thought some would like to know. Apparently this is being done outside of warranty as well as for units still under warranty

Mine will take 6 to 10 days to repair

The advisory and explanations are at

    Oen:

Thanks for the post. Looks like my Coolpix 4300 and the D-50 are okay.

At least Nikon has stepped up to the plate and is going top take care of the problem.

Stay cool and run steam.... [IMG]

That's the BGLOD syndrome - Blinking Green Light of Death. I'm glad Nikon will take care of it, even out of warranty. The earlier D70's have a ribbon cable that just plugs into a connector. It some how can work loose on its own.

The later D70's had a mid production design change and now the ribbon cable is latched/screwed into the connector so it will never work loose.

Mine is the earlier production run and it does not exhibit the problem - near 8,000 shots.

They also issued a battery recall for the D70 for some of the newer batteries. The Lion might explode. They will pay your postage and give you a new battery in return.
