It is amazing what Doyle can accomplish. I sure hope he has all the sheet metal attached in time for the 2005 NRHS convention. NKP 190 will show proudly. Once he finishes it, the Smithsonian had better hire him to do the Santa Fe warbonnet restoration on the other one. He will, as always, do it right.
This is what that derelict looked like in 2002 at the roundhouse. What can't be seen is the work already done by Doyle and crew, except for the trucks.

I just realized something. The D&H painted over the numberboards on the nose of #18 as pictured. I wonder why?

Darren, I dug out my Alco History book and there is a photo of ATSF 51 set. Looks like not only D&H but original owner ATSF did not use the small number plates. Both railroads used the side of the unit to display the numbers. There was quite a variety of number boards among the railroads that bought the PA's.

Here is a postcard which is from Colonie, NY in December 1967 {Just before being painted as D&H #16 & #17} which you can see that yes, ATSF didn't use them and hence the D&H didn't either.

Had never noted this previously. Guess I need to pay closer attention to details.

My guess is that since both SF and D&H only used small Road Numbers (in the 10's) for these units and not in the 100's or 1000's it wouldn't look right so they didn't.

I looked at my "PA4 Locomotive" book by Norman E. Anderson and C. G. MacDermot and they do show a GM&O#292 which did use them.
