WoW!!! I saw her a few years ago in Albany, Ore. with #16, I Thought Doyle would have his work cut out for him. Looks like he did it. Is it in Albany or Portland? anyone know?
My understanding is that once #18 (now NKP#190) was on its new trucks she was moved to Brooklyn Yard in Portland.
No problem but let us not forget she was Santa Fe ( ATSF) #62L but I too will remember her as #18. Photograph by Joe Testagrose on March 24, 1968 in Albany, NY - DHVM Website
I just saw her trucks get painted on July 5 at the Brooklyn roundhouse. She just keeps looking better and better. Doyle said "Give me two more years" and she will be done. The prime mover is installed, has not yet been run. From what I learned at the roundhouse they have a lot of electrical work to do and the traction motors have to be installed. I'll tell you, she's beautiful. An honorary steam locomotive. Darren, I should have shot a pic of the "18" still visible on the butt end. Will post some as soon as I get them scanned. The NRHS Portland Convention was in a word, unforgettable.
It's going to be fantastic seeing this beauty rolling under her own power. Two more years.... Boxcab E50
Ken, it will happen if Doyle has anything to do with it. This photo is of the man himself after viewing the primer coat. He was happy. The trucks were then painted the same color blue as the engine, but I had to go to work at the convention and missed the job. Got later pix, though.
I was thinking they'd paint those trucks silver. Hope that blue doesn't get lost in the future dirt and grime. They'll end up looking closer to black. Boxcab E50
Darren, It's mine. If I post anything by other folks I give them credit. You can use it on your site, and I have more. Just haven't recovered yet to get them all out here.
Darren, here are a few more, and feel free to use them. I shot them at Brooklyn on the 5th. First one shows the front truck primer coat completed. Richard "Durango" Hie did the painting. Doyle liked the white, but it's not NKP prototype. Next one shows why it will be two years. This is the "other side" that is not skinned but allows the guys access to things. You can see the "roof" is not there, either. Then a couple of more. I got one in "the house" later after the blue was applied but it's very dark. (Edit) Oh, yeah, I almost forgot. Look at what is installed up above the cab. I don't know my diesel horns, but I believe that is a Nathan five chime. Doyle kept it for many years to install on this baby.
I sure hope he's got a locking system on those horns. Stealing them is a growing problem. They bring a lot of money from truckers, and collectors. Boxcab E50
