I'm looking for some good books on Norfolk Southern, ones that would cover things like locomotive rosters, rolling stock, operations etc.

    Anybody have any suggestions?

I have a lot of books on the Southern like Diesels of the Southern Railway (which I can't recommend highly enough, a must have for those interested in the Southern), now I need to see what I can find on NS.

Probably the best... though dated, is the 1995 NS Review by Scott Lindsey (I really wish he would do a 2005 Review)

This covers operations by division, train numbering system, detailed roster w/ dispositions, and more...

There are roster books (1982-1994 Motive Power Review by Withers and Bowers... some errors, and not really needed if you have the Lindsey book... unless you're a collector)

Chris Toth wrote Norfolk Southern Diesel Locomotives... some extra info in there... but nothing really outstanding...

You should also not rule out predecessor books... Mason Y Coopers N&W Shenandoah Valley Line is a great book that covers the history of the line all the way to NS...

There are some good Conrail books that cover operations etc as well...

If you liked: Diesels of the Southern Railway then you'll like the Norfolk Southern 1982-1994 Motive Power Review (Withers). [now sold out at Withers, but e-mail me if you need help finding a copy] You'll also like Norfolk Southern Locomotive Directory 2004-2005 by WIthers, although there website says it is now out of print.

Good source for roster shots and info.

    Thanks!

Hundman Publishing had the 1995 Norfolk Southern Review book in stock, so I am starting there. I'll also look into the Withers books. Thanks again!
