Very timely, since Atlas just announced some of these in the "Whiteface" scheme in n-scale. The whiteface GP39M's are one of my favorites. With the GP38-2's on the way (eventually) that leaves the "updated" GP50's and C30-7's left as the last of the core group of BN/BNSF locos needed for N. (Well on the BN side anyway. I think the GP60M can also be solidly thrown in there on the ATSF side) I'll check my stash this weekend and see if I can find some good 39M shots.
Obviously a point of confusion between factory-built GP39-2s and the rebuilt GP39Es (done by EMD) and GP39Vs..........the latter of which took worn-out GP30s and GP35s as starting blocks. And for the record, that 4267 is a GE product- not sure of the model, but I'm guessing a B23-7.
Flash, yes & no; BN rebuilt them in the early-90's. Always a joker in the class--GP39-2.. Smartypants! Either way, nice shots!
It's actually a GP39M, but if the sentiment was that it was a BN rebuild then yes that's right. BN had three major versions of it's rebuilt late-80's/early 90's Geep 30/35's: 1. GP39E- 2750-2778,2900-2940 Rebuilt by EMD. 2. GP39M- 2800-2834,2870-2899 Rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen. 3. GP39V - 2960-2984 Rebuilt by VMV. 141 of the 165 rebuilds received the "white face" scheme.
I remember when the BN GP39-2's were brand new. How the fans were scrambling to photo them. Seems like a million years ago. Boxcab E50
Boxcab just confused me, I didn't think BN had any GP39-2s. I thought they were all of ATSF heritage. Also, I thought that the GP39Es were slug mothers. I seem to remember that from my now 8 year old 97-98 BNSF Motive power Annual. In either case, GP39Ms and Vs were ubiquitous in the Pacific northwest. Once in a great while, you'd see an unmolested GP38-2 or GP39-2. Down here, I see unmodified 30s and 35s.
YoHo, BN had 40 phase IIc GP39-2's delivered in 1981, road numbers #2700-2739. They have kept the same numbers on the BNSF. Dan
Hmmm, I can honestly say I've not once seen a GP39-2 in green and black. Only blue and yellow or Heritage.
Dan, The 2653, 2663, and 2666 are all ex NS (Southern & N&W) GP30's. It's pretty neat that the whole cab was replaced vs just chopping the nose on the units. The give away spotting feature is that the GP30 hood cowl stops at the back of the cab.
