Is NS still useing this route? It would be great if theres some pics out there of the boxcar they use.Any help......regards Patrick
That must be one LONG extension cord. Seriously, I have never heard of this route. Can you give any more information about it?
Hi Mike,The extention cord route is ,I think in NC.Theres a bridge on this route with weight restiction,so what southern and later norfolk southern have done is this.NS took either two GP-38's and smacked a boxcar in the center of them with air lines ,MU hoses. To make a long story short one locomotive was half on and half off this tressle at any given time.By the way ,it's a short bridge....regards Patrick
Hello again Mike,I see by your web site your a fellow NS nut too.I model Southern/Norfolk Southern in HO .Also in the mix is a 16x24 shed to house my new layout.I am going to model a steel mill complex called ,dragon river steel.NS being the main carrier through the mill,DRS switchers running amock in the mill.It will be a few months till I get her up and running.......P.S the extention cord route, the boxcar they used is a forty foot car......regards Patrick
I think the NS still uses an "extension cord" where necessary to reach industries or lines in NC... I do have a lot of contacts around here, so if you can give me some more specifics, I can get them to confirm. Harold
Hi Harold,I'm pretty sure it's in NC.There was an article in trains magazine about ? years ago.I'll check trains.com and see if I can find it.Don't know why I didn't do that to begin with.........Patrick
Patrick, Thanks for the explanation. The extension cord route sounds very interesting and resourceful on NS's behalf. As far as layouts go, you have quite a nice space to build in. Good luck and keep us updated on your progress.
Patrick, Is this perhaps what you are asking about??? As you can see, the pics are about 3 years old but as far as I know, this setup is still in use on the branch lines out of Blacksburg SC.
