My copy of Diesel Era arrived in the mail today and there is an article about Southern GP38-2's. Lots of info and pictures. (Most all went on to NS with the same #'s)

Thanks for the tip! I'll check that issue out. Can it typically be found on the newstand?

BTW - got the books you recommended on NS, very informative, and will be very useful for modeling (and just general knowledge). Thanks again!

Here's the "class" unit, # 5000, idling at the fuel racks in Raleigh:

I really wish Atlas would release these in N scale. It seems to be such a common unit, on so many railroads. And besides, you can't have too many models of the Southern. ;)

There are literally dozens of GP38-2 variations from 1972-1984... three different radiator grills, two different fan arrangements, two diffeent fan styles, two different stepwell arrangements, three different inertial intake grills, two different paper air filter boxes, and eight different DB hatches, etc, etc...

To compund matters, up to 1974, Southern ordered it's GP38-2s with oil bath air filters (the only GP38-2 built with such filters). These were later retrofitted with paper air filters (thus the chopped DB blister)

There are N scale shells available to model any post-1977 GP38-2 (which includes Southern 5202-5206) (the same company also makes a high-hood kit)

The second part of the article is in this month's Diesel Era (Nov./Dec.) that just arrived.
