I joined the Trainboard forum just a couple of weeks ago, so if there already exists a similiar topic, I apologize for starting a new one.

By searching the internet for pictures of NS units I recognized, that there are 2 different logos painted on the units. You can find units with this logo or this one. So where´s the difference between these 2 logos? Is one of them an older logo?

By the way, I was searching the NS homepage for an answer but I couldn´t find one.

I hope someone can help me, and thank you in advance for answering my question :)

The horsehead logo is the newer one. I know of ex-Conrail units without the horsehead, so the change has to have been post-1999... I remember 2002?

Thanks a lot for the quick response. :) So, since 2002 the horsehead logo is the official logo on the NS units?
Do you know, if NS also changed the logo on its cars or rather if the new cars get the new horsehead logo? Can´t imagine, that NS repaints all its old cars.

There are probably a lot more locomotives around in pre-horsehead, and cars are lower priority to repaint. There are many pre-NS N&W and SOU cars left. On CP, I not infrequently see cars so old they can't be in interchange service that are still wearing their original paint.

The new logo can be seen on a lot of the newer power and on some repainted/rebuilt power. The one change with the new look on the loco is the brow of the window is painted white. The only other ones that are not painted white are the older SD40-2 units that don't have the nose cut-out--i.e. the "brick-on-a-skateboard" units.

The NS logo with the horsehead is the newer logo. Older locomotives will have the updated logo added as they are repainted. This will take a very, very long time. All of the new units are painted with this logo. Someone else may have seen it, but I haven't seen the logo on any freight cars (yet).

I believe the freight cars are the last priority to get the new logo. Except for the Track Geometry cars, they have the new logo. Also the F units have the new logos.

Thanks a lot for all your response. I know that the freight cars have the last priority, and that they don´t repaint them all from one day to the next. ;) It was more a general question, if new cars also get the horsehead logo, or if they get the older one. I like the horsehead logo... it´s really impressive on the engines, but I can´t imagine, that it´s as half as impressive on the cars. I like the new one on the engines, but the old one at the cars... But thats just my opinion, and I don´t think, that NS will listen to me... :D

I´ve been busy the last days, that´s why I´m answering so late. Thanks for this information, that helps me a lot. So, last question on this topic: Does anyone know the exact date, when the new logo was introduced? Triplex above mentioned the year 2002, but I think he wasn´t 100% sure, so does anyone know if it really was 2002?

Photog/fan friend confirms late 2002/early 2003 for the "horse head" - he photo'd new 2500 series (SD-70M) Mar 3, 2003 , first application of the new logo was on these 35 units. Bob C.
