Pat, that's interesting stuff. I assume the Lake Shore Limited remained? My association with the RR was back in steam days. I'm having so much trouble accessing the site I'll try to cover all NYC ground in this one post--Johnny T, I have no idea what number the Century had when it arrived nine hours late to Chicago. By that time, I was out on the west coast working on SR-71's, not trains.
The train was combined with cars from the New England States and was considered train #27. I guess #27 also died after it arrived in Chicago.
Jim, The Lake Shore Limted (train #19) was put into service January 13, 1946 and retired October 28, 1956. The last trains eliminated on the NYC 1-26-68: Locals 17,27,28,50,51,61,70,71,73,74,80,81,83,84,85,90,91,305,315,351 Last "named" Passenger: 302 Indianapolis Special 303 James Whitcomb Riley 316 Celeveland Special 354 New York Special 355 Michigan P.S. all locals were pasenger trains too. Freight remained through the Penn Central.
What does this fancy assortment of passenger, observation, 12 section stateroom cars, smoking cars, etc. have to do with the Century? DECIUS, CYRUS, ALROY, SAPPHO, PETRUCHIO, PHILARIO, GONZALO and BENVOLIO.
The Century picked up some cars from the New England States in Buffalo and arrived in Chicago as the New England States. A sad day indeed. The question about the cars, has to do with just the opposite of what we have discused so far! [That's a pretty obvious hint]!
Those fancy sounding cars were some of the names of the cars on the very FIRST 20th Century Limited! June 15th, 1902.
Johnny I tought dey wuz summa da Soprano's buddies, goombah. Where are you finding all this trivia on the Century?
Boo on the third! A Black day. Did anyone read the EM Frimbo account of the 20th Century, and it's last ride? Sad....
Alex hit it right on the head, Fitz! I am reading about the adventures of Mr. Frimbo! Amazing stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!
