Yeah, it's pretty interesting. For someone really interested in modeling it, I would suggest the books, both the one on the railroad and the photography books as well. I've had the chance to look at them and they do cover the subject well.
Watched the videos you'd linked. A nice variety of power and trains. One was really long. I was surprised, with the smaller locos in use. Also rather sickened by the reason they went under. The government in direct competition with the private sector. Absolutely disgraceful.
