Stopped by the port in ogdensbug on Saturday 7/16 and got a few pics of OBPA 14, some freight, and a ground throw for a switch... Hope someone else enjoys these
Wow. Those are some worn old box cars. Still in revenue service? I never thought about that area as a grain shipper, yet across the waters behind that switch stand is a monster sized storage facility. Do you have any historic background on RRing in the vicinity? I have heard of the RW&O. Didn't the Rutland also get to Ogdensburg long ago?
I believe those box cars are in use.. I have been there before when they have not been there.... The facility across the waters... well... the 'waters' is the St Lawrence river... on the other side is Canada (Cornwall, ON to be exact). On both sides of the river up here are a lot of farms (corn and other crops, and dairy farms... and some private livestock). We have a feed company in my town with a few nice silos and their own siding (will be modeled when I get to make my big layout). Historically... I can't speak for much from personal research, but this looks to be a good page of info from around here: http://home.cogeco.ca/~yardlimit/nsl/index.html When I get to build my large layout I hope to loosely model from Syracuse NY North to points in both Ogdensburg NY (port) and Massena NY (alcoa plants). This will include stops in Watertown, Fort Drum, Canton, Norwood
This is all rather interesting. Especially following from that link you posted, onward. Interesting how years after abandoning of service there by the Rutland, the successor to that operation, VTR, re-entered Ogdensburg. Well, when you have some plans sketched up for your model empire, please be sure to share them with everyone here. Boxcab E50
It may be some time... I'm a fulltime student for the next 2 years... then I'll have $$ to pursue my hobby seriously I'm going to intentional not lock myself into any one time frame to give myself more operational variety... there used to be more industries than there are now, and also allowing a wider timeframe allows me to run pre-csx... so I can run some conrail, and with some poetic license NYC too I'll range from RSC-2's through to present (I prefer diesels). Also, in two years I hope to have the cellar cleaned and usable... approx 20' by 30', minus the stairs, water heater, and furnace... lots of space for n scale
I assume it's less expensive to ship grain bound for Europe by rail from the Plains Provinces to the St Lawrence ship-loading facilities, than it would be to load ships in Duluth and Superior, then have them negotiate the Soo Locks and Welland Canal. The ships loaded at Cornwall can be much larger and hold more grain, than those small enough to fit through the locks. Furthermore, I doubt if Lakers could handle the North Atlantic storms like the bigger ships.
Wow. Almost six hundred square feet potentially available. That's way larger than the house I grew up in. This should be very impressive. Boxcab E50
From Cornwall they'd only have to get through the locks in Massena NY (Eisenhower Locks)... an awesome sight to watch ships go through there btw
RAILSEEK Got your request for an entry in RAILSEEK and it's been approved. THANKS for Submitting it!!!!!!!
You're welcome. Should MSTR (Massena Terminal Railroad) be listed too? I tried to submit but it told me it already existed... possibly because it's part of RailAmerica? http://www.railamerica.com/RailServices/MSTR.aspx These are the two shortlines in my area.
