Here's an interesting link to another Fallen Flag, and another New York RR. The New York Ontario And Western RR died 3/31/57, less than two months before I was born. This link shows the abandonded mainline now. It has some really cool pictures of abandoned tunnels and old stations. http://www.railwayresearch.com/NYOW2000index.html
John, that's a nice site, thanks. I believe it was the "Old & Weary" that ran through Cazenovia, NY, my Mother's hometown 20 miles southeast of Syracuse. I never saw trains on that line, but the tracks were still there in the late 40's.
Hank, I'll have to look up that town! That's a real up-stater! The O&W sure faded quickly into history. Gone, but not forgotten!
Ah yes, Cazenovia. When I go back there now everything seems so close together, and when I was a kid, so far apart. For those of you who are interested in the NYO&W, their historical society is atNYOW historical society
Hey Fitz, I believe 3/12 was the anniversary of the last run of the 20th Century. Going to check out the O&W site. Thanks.
Fitz, that's a nice site, although I was hoping to find find a system map to verify my memory. I'm not all that sure the line through Cazenovia was the O&W. It could easily have been part of the old West Shore .... One of my fondest memories of Cazenovia were those "older" girls up at Cazenovia College, y'know the ones who were 19 and 20 years old OK, so I was only 14 and overly stimulated by hormones
Hank, I'm not sure. After all, Cazenovia must have been about 70 miles from Little Falls, and no one ventured out that far in a car. Only if you were riding the rails. Not positive where the West shore ran out there near Syracuse. There were so many RR's back then--the D&H, Erie, NYC, NYO&W, Lackawanna.
