Milwaukee Road 30' caboose 0418 was built in the Milwaukee shops in 1886. The original plans had truss rods and a small side entrance door. This pic would be after 1937 and probably a couple of rebuilds. The truss rods are gone which would indicate she has a new steel underframe. The small side door has be widened to a larger baggage door. The Mil. logo tells us that it is after 1937, the first year logos appeared on cabooses. This caboose was scratch buile using Evergreen groove siding and arious misc. parts. I need to dull up the paint. It's a bit tooooo shiny
Hey, that's a beauty. I've got a thing for cabooses with baggage doors. Could you point me to a source for info (basic dimensions, etc.)on these? Nice! Tom L.
The source is a paper bound book published in 2 volumes by the Milwaukee Road Historical Society. They are hard to find. Milwaukee Road Wood Cabooses is the title. Milw. 'woodys' came in all sizes...tall cupola short cupola, medium.....Length was 28, 30, 33, 36 and some even longer. Baggage doors were also different as many were add or removed during rebuilds.
Very cool Marty....you make me want to be a better caboose maker! ( from the movie "Jerry Caboose Mc Maker"
Marty, this is very nice looking! How did you do the cupola window farmes? Individual strips or did you modify an existing window? Many thanks Dirk
.......so, that hack was built what, 2 years before you were born...? LOL LOL LOL... Nice work Marty; I love your drover style cabeese; they are a work of art !
Dirk For the windows and frames I cut out new windows and frame them with Evergreen strips....010 x.020. They are glued on the edge not the wide flat surface. Then I sand them almost down to the body. The cupola windows were done the same way
