From Reuters via Yahoo: Canadian train in quarantine after death, illness TORONTO (Reuters) - One person died and several others were taken to hospital after a mystery illness hit passengers on a Canadian long-distance train, local media said on Friday. Canadian Press said the train had some 290 people on board and was on a cross-Canada route between Vancouver and Toronto. One person died, and several were ill with flu-like symptoms. The train was in quarantine in the small northern Ontario community of Foleyet, and nobody except emergency personnel were being allowed aboard. "The whole place is being overrun with ambulances and police cars, and we've got helicopters," town chairwoman Deborah DesRochers told Canadian Press. Folyet is a town of some 350 people southwest of the mining town of Timmins. The town's website says it's famous for a herd of rare white moose that lives nearby.
That's terrible. The use of the word "several" may indicate that whatever it is is contained to only 10-20 of the 290 on board and hopefully won't spread further.
Apparently there were three unrelated incidences that occured concurrently, which caused the train's crew to react...I can't fault them for that either. The following is excerpted from an Associated Press release. "TORONTO -- "Authorities quarantined a train in Ontario Friday after a woman died and several others reported being ill. But a doctor later ruled out a serious infectious disease and said the train would likely soon resume its journey. "Dr. David Williams, Ontario's chief medical officer, said that an elderly woman who died on the train did not have an infectious disease and the illnesses were unrelated. "A passenger who was airlifted to a hospital and five others who reported being sick had unrelated minor illnesses, Williams said. He called it a confluence of three different events. " 'One person was hospitalized in stable condition,' said Laurel Ostfield, a spokeswoman for Ontario's minister of health. " 'The origin of the illness that caused the passenger death is unknown at this time,' Williams said. 'Lab tests have to date have eliminated a number of serious infectious illnesses.' "Williams anticipated that the train will continue onto Toronto later Friday."
