This weekend I was going to put up the wallboard in a 8' by 12' (rough) unfinished room we have. Discovered dryrot and water damage, so the room is now stripped down to the studs.
The good news, a post in the middle of the room has been eliminated (and the house didn't fall).
I was working backwards, building the benchwork before the plan was final. I guess I have more time to work on the plan now.
I will soon have web site posting developments.
Thanks for all the help from this board.
And this all started with my old Tyco HO train that I got out of the box a year ago. Now I'm replacing 80 sq. ft. of siding on our house. All for N scale. Geez.

Oh well. Thats life. You are fortunate that you found the trouble before you completed your layout.

You might want to check on that post again, is there a heavy wall or something above where it was. It could have been a load bearing point in the framing system. Things like this usually dont fall all at once when you remove the support, just sort of sag over time.
As an alternative to the post, if you have the celing open now, just add a couple of celing joists next to the one that the post supported. run them to the walls of the room, ans suppoet the ends with additional wall studs. That will probably make up for the missing post. HTH.....Mike

I will be having a 'professional' come to look at the situation to make sure all is OK. I was thinking along the same lines as for the beams. Hopefully soon I will have photos and website.
