When was the last time someone spotted a orange and white ICG diesel? Are there any in that sheme sitting in museums? I live in Denver and still see Geeps in D&RGW paint. Patched, but still in the cool old paint scheme. Some day they'll stop running and that will be another sad day on the planet.
Geeky, Last ones I saw were the GP38s that went to the Katy. They weren't repainted- just a primer patch job over the ICG reporting marks & name with MKT initials & the new road number. With the grime that accompanies a well-used IC/ICG engine, it really looked like a rent-a-wreck with the primer job added here & there. This was back around spring of 1988, on the North Canadian River bridge by LAke Eufala. IIRC, all the remaining IC diesels were repainted black before the sale to CN.
Thanks for the info bob. ARGH, that black scheme just doesn't do it for me. I prefer my N&W units to be black and my ICG to be orange and white. but thats just me being stuck in the seventies without a disco ball.
The black scheme probably came about for two reasons. One being a break from predecessors. Which had some operating and financial questions. The other possibility being cost. I liked seeing the orange and white, pre-ICG. Seems to me that when they added the "Gulf", things started sliding quickly downhill. Boxcab E50
Yeah the merger wasn't such a good idea after all huh? I bet some execs probably said just that after they watched everything go bad.
Keep in mind that IC's first diesel scheme (freight diesel) was black, so it was a return to its roots when they re- introduced the black. The addition of the "Death Star" logo on the nose helped a lot. THAT black scheme looks a lot better than NS's black-with-white-splotches scheme. The only thing I didn't like about the orange & white was that it weathered badly- when it got dirty, it looked awful. Apparently IC followed the SP theory of diesel washing- don't.
Bob- Yes. The original IC diesel scheme was black. With the green diamond. Their passenger colors were a lot nicer! An orange and brown. Which was very classy! Boxcab E50
I liked the passenger scheme and the E units to go with it. No space for it on my planned table sized layout , but it looked great.
The only photos I have are the patched MKT Orange & Whites. (You can still see those colors under the dirt and rust if you look real close.)
Some Paducah geeps left the IC before being painted black and went to places like Iowa Interstate - some of those hung around in orange & white for a long time but I don't know if any still are?
My favorite scheme is the Death Star. But a close second is the attractive black-and-gray scheme used on the passenger cars and E9s in the 1990s.
There were a few passenger cars in the black and gray scheme here in Calgary last year. I'll see if I can find the pictures I got.
So do I, even though N&W black is dull and ICG orange/white looks terrible when dirty. They're just what those railroads are to me. Anyway, the pictures I mentioned: I like how the stripes continue between the cars in a manner that only works as long as they're ordered the same way. Somehow, I like it because it's a little impractical.
ICG deathstar spotted in Wisconsin I saw this gp20/gp40? the other day switching cars on the old wisconsin central (CN line now I believe). I got there a little too late as the enging started moving before I could get many good shots. I also see a ton of ic and icg cars of all types on this line all the time. I can post if anyone wants to see. I am hoping to spot an orange and white engine someday. Notice the glowing red dots on the operation lifesaver logo. Pretty cool hey? Enjoy!

nice picture. I might have to convert my undecorated kato sd 40 to this one. I am teaching myself how to paint. When I get much, much, much better I will give it a try. I will post some more pictures soon. Jeff
