Hi all, Found some n scale stacks of crates that are either plastic or resin. Looking for some ideas on colors to use to simulate wood? Or other ideas to do with them?
If weathered, a light-medium gray. If new, a light yellow-tan. Depends on what material the crates are made. If maple, oak or other light hardwood, I would go with one the lighter ones with a hint of a light yellow added. If pine, add a bit more more yellow. I would try these: https://plaidonline.com/shop-products/folkart-flat-ultra-matte-acrylic-paint-almond-latte-2-oz-50921 https://plaidonline.com/shop-products/folkart-acrylic-colors-hazy-moon-2-oz-11929 https://plaidonline.com/shop-products/apple-barrel-colors-beige-2-oz-4471e https://plaidonline.com/products/apple-barrel-colors-ivory-2-oz-k20516 https://plaidonline.com/products/apple-barrel-colors-pale-daffodil-2-oz-21473 As to ideas, you can have palletized loads (drums, boxes) on a dock for loading, a forklift or pallet jack loading them, or stacks of used pallets behind a warehouse. Try a big crate or pieces of machinery atop one. Add banding to secure the items. I know this is getting ambitious... Weather them; the worse they look, the better. I like to upcycle these. I upcycled a stack of pallets 12' tall into a landscape border (over 200 feet worth). You can also have a stack of fresh ones, nice and neat, for use. I would try one stack banded and a partial stack in front of it, as if it were being used. Perhaps put the stack of fresh ones atop a weathered one. Scrape, cut and distress the weathered pallets with various tools to make damage. As always, toss them around behind fences & buildings, like trash.
A simple image search in Google for pallets will yield all sorts of ideas. Some are painted on the sides. How steady are your hands?
In general: I just play around with those colors till I get what I want. If detail is not critical then using 'Testors generic acrylic paints, (in the white 'jars'), I tend to: Start with brown Add black or white and maybe red or yellow or Start with red and add white or black Have fun. Line them up and test variious colors. Note: I have very poor color vision and don't care about details.
