OK, let's see....Pan Am was the first US company to: use flying boats for international service; use Boeing 707 jet aircraft for international service; use Boeing 747 jet aircraft for international service. So I guess Pan Am will be the first to use jet-powered locomotives for international service? :shade: I think the concept of the head-end crew belonging to the Airline Pilots Union instead of the BLE may cause some excitement...mg: :zip: BTW, B&M and MEC jointly owned the B&M/MEC Airline around the WW-II time-frame, so this is not that far out......
Ummm... When they start calling trains "flights," refer to tracks as "runways," and a conductor is the "flight attendant...." mg: Boxcab E50
I saw one of these PANAM boxcars last week in Puyallup WA. on the Renton Rocket, BNSF's Crew 8, that moves cars from Tacoma WA. yard to Auburn WA. yard and back again
It might be a little exciting to hear the following on the scanner..... "Uh Dispatch, this is train XYZ123, we have just had takeoff, over." As the train comes to rest in the middle of a cornfield......mg:
A better picture of the new Pan Am loco paint scheme: http://photos.nerail.org/showpic/?photo=2006110715270814221.jpg&bydate:4 Sort of reminds me of the GN Sky Blue Scheme (or MRL):
Well, the paint scheme looks OK. But, seeing that name billboarded, just looks absolutely ridiculous. Boxcab E50
Whoa! http://photos.nerail.org/showpic/?photo=2006110410452926070.jpg&byrail:1:Pan_Am_Railways wasn't working for me the first time I checked, so I hadn't seen any photos of this locomotive until now. I wondered if someone had linked to a certain Photoshopped image of a Pan Am loco made before #505 was actually painted. It doesn't really remind me of Big Sky Blue - more of a recolored BN.
I think the color scheme shown in Bruce's photo has merit, not very imaginative, but it could grow on me. Of course, it'll never replace B&M's maroon body, gold striping, and Minute Man herald on their Es and Fs.
Amazing, Guilford FINALLY did something I like. I started modeling the Santa fe and BNSF because there was nothing worth modeling in my neck of the woods after 1984!
The paint scheme was not bad, just the management. B&M employee's got shafted and Guilford cut back a lot of lines in NH. Some made sense, but why they killed the northern, a straight shot to Montreal is beyond me. I know they had the Conn. River to Canada but NH has been wanting stack trains on the Northern for years. Not all was lost however as Conrail brought in the Bow Power Plant coal train. I got a lot of pictures of Big Blue, now thats gone:angry: .
Doesn't NH own the rails from Concord to Plymouth? If NH truly wanted to support stacks up to Montreal, wouldn't it make sense for them to bring the Plymouth-Woodsville line back to life....or were the rails ripped up and the ROW sold?
Hank, yes the state does own that section of track. Currently the track between Concord and Penacook, is still operated by the New England Southern, although I have never seen a train in the Penacook yard since the Geeps were blue (1983). Beyond the Hannah Dustin park and all the way up north there is still track but it has not seen activity since the B&M. There was great intrest to revive the line, I remember seeing the survayers (sp) checking the bridge hights for modern double stacks. While most people support it, we always have the "not in my backyard" lot. Because of them, the rails sit in weeds. I doubt the northern line will ever see activity again.
Sad...you'd think with NAFTA and the St. Lawrence being ice-bound for much of the winter, that stack movement between Montreal and Boston's container terminal would be good business for NH. The track between Concord and Plymouth is still in reasonable shape. I read that Guilford, or somebody, still runs as-needed at least up to Tilton, perhaps even to Laconia or Lakeport. I believe that Winnipesaukee/Hobo maintains the tracks from Laconia, Lakeport, or Weirs all the way to Lincoln. The last activity I remember seeing on the northern line was the southbound Alouette coming through Plymouth in '53....:shade: BTW, where is Hannah Dustin Park, I don't recognize the name?
You lucky guy you! This B&M chat as good as it is, seems to be hijacking this thread, so Hank and anyone else interested I'll post more of my memories of the B&M in the B&M FF section. I'll also answer your question on Hannah Dustin Park. Regarding the Pan Am paint scheme, yeah I like it, but it sure looks weird to see that font on a locomotive. Must cause some confusion at Manchester International airport! Guilford has or had tracks by the airport. Microscale take notice! I have needed an excuse to do one of those ex Canadien safty cab GP40s in N.
PanAm @ Today's Trains Newswire Trains Newswire just posted this photo of Pan Am's newest paint job. Clink on http://www.trains.com/trn/default.aspx?c=a&id=1124 for the full article.
Here is the other side of same loco. http://64.246.11.82/images/images2/5/505-PanAM-side-EXN1.jpg.84956.jpg
Interesting...I wonder how many photographers can hold copyrights to the same subject? For that matter, how can anyone claim copyrights to photographs taken at a public showing of equipment sponsored by the corporation that owns the equipment....? There are subtleties of US law that I will never comprehend. mg: :zip:
I know nothing of Guilford's management record - I just like their colour scheme. I'm working at modelling a mid to late 1980s yard with Guilford power. Might include a yet-to-be-repainted BM or MEC loco if the budget will stretch that far, plus hopefully some "foreign" visitors. Can anyone suggest which railroads I might include? Thanks for the PanAm photos. Mike
