From commuter, locals, mail, and main line passenger trains what kind of passenger trains and equipment was the PC running its final year of passenger service from April 30, 1970 to April 30, 1971, the day before Amtrak took over?
They were pretty much out of mail trains, but running every other class on your list. Most of their passenger equipment was old NYC, PRR, Erie and etc. equipment, and those units that had been redecorated in any kind of a PennCentral scheme were pretty rare. Most of the discontinued services were New York Central, as most of the PC executives were Pennsy men. For example, the Twentieth Century was discontinued during that period, but not the Broadway.
Most mail and express traffic was handled in solid Mail Trains composed of Flexi-vans. Commuter trains varied by location, and ranged from elderly MU cars to government owned modern MUs. Corridor trains included Metroliner MUs, Locomotive powered conventional trains of 1950s era stainless steel cars. The remaining long haul trains used late 1940s, early 1950s long haul sleepers/coaches and food service cars, as well as some hold over P70s (FBA). Equipment, track and employee morale were in bad shape and it reflected on the entire operation.
