I didn't vote because I like both Walthers and DPM. It all depends on what structure you need. If you need some turn of the century town structures nothing compares to DPM. If you need a coal mine or grain elevator go for walthers.

Can't vote - only one choice allowed!

Suggest you modify the poll to permit voting for more than one entry. I have both DPM and Walthers plastic kits, plus some Vollmer, Kibri, Bachmann and Con-Cor kits!

I even "bash" kits from various manufacturers together. :cat:

I did not respond to your poll because it was either-or, which doesn't make any sense to me. Some brands are better than others for certain purposes, but I do not intend to build a COMMERCIAL BRAND-NAME model railroad layout.
I model a Santa Fe secondary line through a courthouse square town in the piney woods of East Texas. I use whatever structures best capture the appearance I want to convey. That means-

Arnold Rapido, Bachmann, Heljan, Micro Engineering, Model Power, Pola, Rix, Walthers Plastic model railroad building kits built more or less as designed

Heljan Plastic model railroad kits radically kitbashed

Hasagawa Japanese 1/700 naval scene kits bashed to N scale industrial models

Garage-sale discarded children's toys kitbashed into architectural models

    Magnuson, Showcase Minature resin kits

    Railhead wood-and-cardstock craftsman kits

Scratchbuilt structures in styrene, wood, and/or cardstock from simple to board-by-board from published scale drawings, original scale drawings and photographs from prototype research, and from freelance designs.

"Scratch-drawn" computer-generated image files printed on light cardstock and assembled

Gold Medal photo-etched brass detail parts

See my structures at my railimages site:

I use all three but voted for DPM because I use more of them. However most all get cut up and kit bashed to make something very different from the stock models.

I use from several different manufacturers. Period is important and I agree with above as to certain companies doing a better job with a specific period or type of structure.

The reason the poll was limited is because companys like Bachmann,
Heljin and Model Power will not deal with a small Mom & Pop operation like me!
The ones listed are willing to allow smaller minimum purchases.

From what I have seen on this board most polls tend go take a similar turn. Model railroaders are so creative and to an extent independant that it is sorta like trying to herd cats. :)
Some day I'll do them. For now budget dictates paper.

Sorry, I misunderstood this poll. I missed the phrase "on my site." I interpreted it in terms of "what structures do you prefer using on a layout?" and I think it was more intended to determine which structures modelers are most likely to buy, for making a decision whwat to carry in an on-line hobby store.

Still, I think allowing modelers to vote for more than one preference would have been appropriate. (Don't know if trainboard is set up to allow variations in types of polls....)

    Hi David,
Welcome to the enjoyable art of writing Trainboard Polls. Of course your poll is #@#$@ but someone else already said that didn't they. :) I probably have 10 polls floating around on the board and I think everyone of them has been whacked by people that I can find no poll they ever wrote. Thanks for being brave and putting it up for us to critique and miss the whole point! Keep it up, I think the polls are very educational and they do stimulate conversation around the topic you are interested in. Thick skin is required to author them though. . .:shade:

On to the point of your Poll
I am starting to put a building or two on the Parkland RR V2 and have a few of many different manufacturers including some scratchbuilt by a friend.

Yesterday, at the Caboose, I was taking some pictures of their outstanding HO layout. (IMHO it is outstanding). This beauty is what I think a great model railroad looks like. My point is they had a map of the layout telling the names and manufacturers of the kits and I was surprised to see that it was alphabet soup! Atlas, Cornerstone, Central valley, IHC, Model Power, etc, etc, etc.

I walked away with this thought in my mind. Use whatever manufacturer out there, so long as they build something that you like and fits into your needs. All put together, it is very hard for the average Joe Daddy to discern the difference!

Best regards and we look for your next poll to have our way with!

    Joe

    I really like pikestuff & Nu-line for modern warehouse/industry.
Pikestuff makes some excellent smaller railroad engine sheds or maintenance garages. These kits are easy to put together and offer excellent kit bashing ideas.
