I am doing some research for a family that wants to set up a shelf layout in their sons room. It will be around 3 walls and point to point. Nothing special, a few sidings, not really a true switching layout. Anyhow, they want to be able to allow the train to run hands free. They also want to make it fool proof, so their son can't run it off the end of the track.

I found the Circuitron AR1 which seems to be the right item to fit the bill, but they are out of stock at this time. There is an AR2 which is the same thing with an adjustable delay between reversings that is in stock.

I found a few others that used reed switches but I don't like that idea. I like the photo cell idea or even better would be a load sensing circuit on an insulated block at each end of the track. Does anybody have any experience or suggestions for other options to look into?

By the way, this is for an HO DC system.
