Darren I was killing time so i looked at your vacation shots right on your RI album. You really got a nice sample of euro stuff on your trip. I'm still really impressed with your swiss items. Very cute, you'd think they were planning it so model railroaders would have a nice compact and picturesque prototype to follow. That car looks like the SNCF car I have here.
This one can run on the electric overhead, or use a diesel engine when the power if turned off. It is on a engineers train in Kandersteg on the BLS.
Via the Chunnel? Boxcab E50 </font>[/QUOTE]Yup - not too fond of the ferries, althgough I have used them many times before the tunnel was built.
Here ar some shot I got last winter (02/03/2005) on the hills behind Genova (Genoa). There are two lines build in the second part of the XIX century connecting Genova to Milano (Milan) an Torino (Turin), at that time the most important industrial development site. The first one (old line) has been built with a 3,5% grade. The second one with a "lower" 2% grade! Here is a 636 class electric locomotive (FS Cargo) heading downhill to Genova an intermodal train on the new line (note, on the top right corner, the "old line", still in use as back up and for local or passenger traffic): Same location, on the opposite direction. A 656 electric class pushing a reversible passenger train to Genova: Empty flat cars going uphill behind a 652 class electric: On the "old line", a reversible composition headed by a 464 class is climbing the hill to the summit tunnel (left hand running is the rule in Italy). Note how the iron oxide is covering the dowhill track due to the heavy brake applications!
