Latelly rumours have been flying that Via Rail wants to get rid of the Malahat run on Vancouver Island between Victoria and Courteny, and the Churchill run between Winnipeg-The Pas-Lynn Lake-Thompson-Churchill. I am not sure, but I am fairly sure that both lines are big money losers. The Malahat line has been plagged with trouble for over 15 years as the RDCs are in bad shape, and unless they have just gotten back into service, all service is being done by bus cause the RDCs are all down. Via is, however, rebuilding the cars one by one. Still, they are not ultra reliable. The Churchill run I do not know alot about, but it is home to one of the last mixed trains in North America. I rode the Malahat in the spring of 1999 & thoroughly enjoyed the trip. If it goes private or not I sure hope they keep it running. Reggie ------------------

Reggie

Well, as this is still mostly rumour npothing is sure yet, but the interested investor for the Malahat is Ross Rowland. I am sure if he gets it he will do a great job as he is with the new Pacific Wilderness Trains that he has running on the same trackage. Happy Railroading!! Where do you get your information? Remember...rumours are nothing but rumours. ------------------ Bannon C Woods Jr VIA Rail Canada Safety, Health & Environment
Canadian-Passenger-Railways@EGroups.com (I think thats the addy) Ross Rowland has publically expressed interest in getting the rights to the Malahat Another discussion board and a Baggage Handler at the Vancouver station. It has made several local publications, and Via has always wanted to get rid of the Malahat run. I believe they have tried 3 times since Via was formed. Romours are rumours, but some times they turn out to be true! (I heard about CN-BNSF 2 days early-I must say I didn't believe it at all!!!!) Happy Railroading!!
