To celebrate my wife's birthday earlier this year we took a ride on the "Citadella" from our home town, Ptuj, Slovenia to Budapest, Hungary to explore this city for a few days. The "Reagan" American diesels take the train to the border station of Hodoš. Now in Hungary or train is hauled by an MAV 431 electric loco.
At Zalaegerszeg, a busy junction station our train reverses. Another 431 awaits. These single car DMU's are used extensively on lightly used lines One of the class 62 "Sergej" Russian diesels which were widespread across the eastern bloc. many are still in service. Passing one of the new Siemens Taurus electrics near Budapest
Cool shots Alan , thanks for sharing . I still cannot get use to seeing bumpers on rolling stock in Eruope ..
A small center cab shunting loco. One of the large 6-axle electrics, mostly used on freight. Colourful vinyls on a Siemens electric Budapest Deli station (one of 4 main stations in the city) r
A chunky diesel shunter on station pilot duties. These sound great! Old electric locos, now used for carriage heating duties Paperwork for our train home being completed
One of the smaller 4-axle diesels, class 418 Plinthed steam loco at Zalaergerszeg Back at Hodos, our Hungarian loco has detached and heads back to the Hungary end of station, where it will take a freight train home.
Alan- After seeing the steam loco and older electrics, I am wondering about railroad preservation or museums in your region?
Ken, I have a set of pictures I made at Ljubljana Railway |Museum back in 2007 Here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/andersley_images/sets/72157627873058763/ During the summer months regular steam hauled trains with vintage rolling stock, including 4-wheel coaches, are run from Jesenice near the Austrian border along the extremely scenic Soca River route to Nova Gorice, on the Italian border.
Also many stations have plinthed steam locos. Externally restored only, like this one at Pragersko, only 15 minutes from here.
It's great to know they've kept many locos. They may be only cosmetically maintained, but full restoration is still possible, some day.
