Morning everyone!! I have a question. In some publication or website posting sometime back concerning a club (in CA I think). That put a layout inside of an old railcar. Our club (OKNRail) is looking for a permanent home I recalled this article, but can't find it. Does anyone know what club(s) this is? How well does it work, etc.?? Thanks a million!!
The local club here in Chehalis WA is currently located in a box car. I don't think it is a very happy place. Membership has dropped to almost zero. The box car is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Track expansion and contraction is a major problem. They are now looking at a possible move to a more temporate location. David
David, The one I was thinking of was an old passenger car, dining car, or something like that, but thanks for the input!!! Richard
If you have electricity, why not install a small furnace / AC unit . Sure would make things livable....Mike
That's kind of what I was thinking. Get a good location and put in a small heating/ac unit to keep temp. swings from being too drastic and call it good
Throw in some fibreglass insulation to the roof and walls and you're looking good too, even without the furnace and AC (though it would be better with both). That stuff is pretty cheap, but with zero membership, maybe not!
For yourself I would say Excellent ! But for a club it would be way to restrictive. There wouldnt be much room for change, or expansion, and once you had a few members tryin to walk past each other etc, and somewhere for those staging yards, for others to sit and chat/watch, it would get real cramped. YMMV
Those are all good points. I have seen a website from a club in Maryland (HO I think) that has this kind of setup and they have reflected the same kinds of comments. But I think it is still something I will pass along to the club. With N trak modules, we wouldn't need as much room, especially if we had a modified dogbone type setup. It might require a couple of special modules or bridges, but it could still work, depending on what kind of car it could be in. It would be great if we could find an old superliner!!! Anyway, thanks for the input and if you think of something more, I'll keep checking for new posts. Thanks!
