Did they all get the 6000 horsepower engines. The last I knew the ones that recieved them were numbered in the 7500 series. But then I heard now that 6000 horsepower engines have stopped.

If these loco did get them engines at what in 7500 series did they stop and resume the 4400 horsepower engines.

AFAIK, only they 7500-series got the 6000 HP prime mover. www.Utahrails.net says that 7500-7579 were the real C60ACs.

    http://www.utahrails.net/all-time/modern-index.php is an EXCELLENT resource!

The other 7000-series are 'convertibles'--they can be built with a 4400 HP engine, and swap out to a 6000 HP engine when that prime mover is available and reliable. Note: some C44ACs were numbered in the 7000-series as well...

Witness this convertible just west of Tunnel 29:

The last I read on these units was that after much teething they finally got the 6000hp engines to run reliably. However they are not as fuel effiecent as advertiesed, and UP decided not to convert the remaining convertibles as planned and left them at 4400hp.

I haven't seen any more or newer AC6000's... I think CSX had a bunch, then briefly rerated some to C44-6's, but they are again listed as CW60AC's..

I think the idea is dead now because there is no Tier II equivalent.

Unfortunately if you look at my site and try to separate the two, 6000hp and 4400hp, you'll have some difficulties. I have kept the two together so far. Hemi has it right above with the latest 7500-7579 series being 6000hp and the rest are convertables. None of the C6044ACs have been converted and won't be either.

Were the convertible units more expensive than the 4400 horse units? How much cheaper were they compared to the C60's?

Ok so any of the AC6000CW's in 7500 series is a true 6000 horsepower engine. I did want to mistake any that weren't. I know UP is on major renumbering scheme and I thought they would all be renumber according to Model designations. Like all SD70M's number together and all C44-9W's and so forth. And I thought some of the convertibles would have strayed in the 7500 series as well.

    Thanks guys

Nope, the current 75xx series are all 6000hp. The current series for the 4400hp conv. units is 73xx.

I thought the easiest way to determine which units were 6000hp was to look at the exhaust stacks. If the unit has two stack its 6000hp, if it has one its 4400hp.

Is this the case or have csx units detuned to 4400hp have single stacks or the original twin stacks?

I checked my photos of CSX units, which includes both units stenciled CW60AC and CW44-6 (de-rated). Both still have the dual stacks.

CSX apparently re-rated the units back to 6000 hp at some point within the last couple of years.
