Alan, your travels and your photos never cease to amaze us.

My question to you, and anyone else outside the U.S. is whether you have ever taken photos in my neck of the woods?

We had a family holiday to the Eastern US back in 1994, I didn't get much railfanning done, but I did shoot some MBTA stuff in Boston, the Vermont Railway, and Metro North and Amtrak on the NEC in Conneticut. We did pass through NYC to visit a relative on Long Island, and had a day sightseeing in NYC, but no railfanning that day unfortunately. :(

In 2000 I went from Washington DC across to Chicago and back, which was a railfan trip not a holiday, but that missed NYC by a good margin. So far I haven't got west of Joliet, so I think I need to revisit... [IMG]

Johnny, mostly my shots have been in Minnesota and Tennessee/Kentucky with some taken in California, Wisconsin, and MT/ND.

There are a couple in Joisey, though... it was a tourist line that runs out to the outlet stores in Flemington.

Ok. My next question is, when are you guys coming back? [IMG]

Gats, that was the Black River and Western Railroad. I had my first cab ride there in an
old RS1 or 2. (Since sold).

If I could I would be on a plane tomorrow! There are so many bits of the US I still want to railfan....erm visit.

I want to visit Arizona, as from the Rock Springs group I'm one of the only two folk from the group to have not visited the bit of the country we are modelling!
I'd like to do a couple of weeks knocking round Washington, Oregon and maybe into Montana.
I'd like to revisit Horseshoe curve and Altoona when it's not closed! (We went on a holiday weekend & saw three trains all day!!!)
I'd not need much convincing to revisit Ohio, some excellent railfanning spots there.
I'd like to follow the Santa Fe mainline from Chicago out to Kansas City, that looks pretty cool as well...
And I guess there are various California bits that I wouldn't mind seeing as well... ;)

My last railfanning trip was before I got married & mortgaged, so I had the freedom to take a couple of weeks, load up the credit card and head on out...I think it would take a little more planning these days. :(
And Rachel would want to go too of course, so we would have to balance railfanning time with shopping time... :D

Maybe we can find some malls where you can railfan from the parking lot? :D ;)

Martyn, you left out New York City! :(

We'll drop off Rachel on 5th Ave. so she can shop and we boys will go out railfanning.

I'm waiting for someone from TB to say to me that they are coming here!

My advice to them: BRING YOUR WALKING SHOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [IMG]

Babs, I'm a fan of Minneapolis/St Paul. I have a good friend down Mankato way with rels in Duluth, and I am a fan of the Soo Line and Twin Cities and Western.
So I have shots from the all points of the compass in MN! [IMG]

Yep, that's the one, John. Have another mate who lives not too far from Flemington. It was diesel-hauled the day we were there.

As for heading back, I need to see how work is faring on this side of the pond - big changes have just occurred. Otherwise, I'm looking at being in the Upper Mid-west for the Soo Historical Society's convention in Michigan during October. Maybe a Joisey trip in the meantime? :D

If you had a couple of weeks, you could easily spend that much time in WA-OR-ID-MT. Even though much railroading is long abandoned, there are still sights to see. Worthy of both experience, and recording for modeling purposes.

While riding the ferries in Washington, to many places of beauty and relaxation, there are traces of logging RR heritage. Across mountains there are tunnels and bridges that once carried rails. Which now can be toured on foot or via bicycle. These extend across many parts of WA-ID-MT.

If ever you planned to come, best time of year might be early Spring, while schools are still in session, thus fewer touring families meandering about. Or the Fall. When there can be some quite spectacular colors on the trees. These seasons also avoid the heat and fire seasons, associated media hysteria, [IMG] etc......

As this is my back yard, I am slightly biased... Great RR history, and the scenes one can model!!!!!!!!!!!

I was eight times in the USA, but only once in NY.
The best trip was in 1997 when I travelled along the UP tracks from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City and further to Reno, Sacramento, Tehachapi and Back to L.A. [IMG]
For next year I plan to come over to the west coast for six or eight weeks. [IMG]

As Johnny will verify, no trip to the New York Area is complete unless you include the

    Ah, Peirce.
That sign brings total delight to the young and old alike!
    Gotta love the DRM!!!!!!!!!!!
    Wonderful Place!

    side note:
I was talking to my cousin Pete the other day. He's from Sandpatch. I told him we all went to the DRM and he said, "Yeah! I heard that's a really nice place!"

    one more side note:
Along RT 84 you have the DRM, The Golden Age of Trucking Museum, and a military museum all within a not too far driving distance from one another. What a wonderful state to enjoy historical things!
