The most historic picture of the Armistice signing that ended the "Great War" has a railroad car in it. A car of the Compagnie International de Wagons-Lits was used as a meeting place on the battlefront. The Wagons-Lits company is still around and has a website which includes the Armistice picture on its history page. http://www.wagons-lits.com/gb/major_dates.html
Remember all the railroad battalions that were organized, and called to action. I've met some of those fellows, who were called away from their jobs on railroads here in the USA. And sent overseas. There was even a training railroad built from scratch, in Louisiana between Camp Polk, and Camp Claiborne. Boxcab E50
