The suspension bridge in my photo connects the city of Lisbon, capital of Portugal, to the municipality of Almada on the left bank of the Tagus river. It was opened on August 6, 1966, and a train deck was added in 1999 for commuter rail.
It's fascinating how some bridges are so over-designed that they can add a second deck 30+ years later with no ill effects. The same was true with the George Washington Bridge in New York when they added "Martha" underneath in the 60's, and the Huey P Long in New Orleans when four more traffic lanes were added outboard of the existing four just ten years ago, some 70 years after it was built.
