    I wonder if the covered hopper on the ethanol train is buffer between the locomotives and the tank cars. It may be filled with a fire retardant that also could absorb any ethanol flowing or flying forward during a wreck.

    If memory serves, some kind of inert car is mandated between locos and any hazmat cars.

    FRA rule states that there must be atleast 1 buffer car between locomotives and hazard car and also 1 buffer car between a hazardous car and a occupied caboose.
