Hi all, I've a question here for all Thai RR fanatics (especially SRT-FAN:tb-wink. Is anyone here aware of a location in downtown Bangkok where I could watch freight trains? Is hould be happy if I could see some on the line that leaves easwards and proceeds just north of Suvarnabhumi Airport. Any input appreciated!:tb-wink: Dom, in Bangkok until next tuesday.
Dom, Freight trains on SRT can be unpredictable and some run only at night, but I'd recommend Makkasan Station.
Makkasan is very good for container trains but the construction of the airport link has spoiled the area for taking pictures really. If you can get out to Chachoengsao Junction just down the line there is a lot more space if you want to do 'Big' shots of freight. You'll get container trains, fuel trains etc. There is also a preserved North British steam locomotive (4-6-0) plinthed outside the station. Passenger traffic is quite good as well
Do you mean Chachoengsao Junction is beyond the airport and its overhead rail link? Wherever it is, thanks to you as well as to SRT-FAN for your input! I think I'll go tomorrow to Makkasan Station, as furthermore it's easy to get there with the subway! Cheers, Dom
Heck with railfanning thailand , i'd rather be fanning the women. ever been to pattaya beach, thailand? if not you better go and see it for yourself. this place is heaven.
Dom Pattayas o.k but a bit grubby to be honest. Thai girls are very friendly, paricularly if they think you are going to build them a house there! Next time you are over, I know you haven't got a lot of time left this time, get off the underground/metro at Bang Sue. walk straight over the S.R.T tracks and head for the big marsalling yard there. Ask at the office for Akii and tell him you are fan of 'ROTFAITHAI'. If he is there he will look after you. If you go to Makkasan will you do me a favour? Walk across the tracks and have a look over the wall and tell me what steam locomotives are stood there. I am trying to keep tabs on where they are stored at the moment with a view to blagging my way into the works in January to do some detail shots for a series of articles I am doing for a railway modelling magazine Cheers KEV.
OK guys, finally I've been at the junction between Sri Ayuttaya Rd and Phayathai Rd, just under Sky Train's station "Phayathai", as the west sight of the right of way is for the moment free from future overhead line bound for Suvarnabhumi airport. Sorry Kev, I didn't go to Makkasan and thus I was unable to catch your steamers...:tb-wacky: No freight trains during my 1h30' railfanning session, but a lone GE diesel (infortunately not a "Shovelnose") and a few commuter trains....:tb-wink: Dom
